BUBAA Scholarships
The Bradley University Black Alumni Alliance (BUBAA) offers two annual scholarships. The first honoring the late Dr. Barbara Penelton, associate professor emeritus and chairman of teacher education, who died on March 18, 2013 in Peoria. Dr. Penelton taught at Bradley from 1969 to 2002, receiving the Putnam Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2001. Active in the community, she was inducted into the local African-American Hall of Fame and received the Mergen Award for Public Service. She held a doctoral degree from Indiana University. The second is the Black Alumni Scholarship.
The Dr. Barbara S. Penelton and Black Alumni Scholarshipsa are designed to create a diverse campus environment by helping to attract and retain African-American students. Only through exposure to many cultures and free exchange of ideas are students enabled to make well-informed observations regarding the similarities and differences inherent in the human race and to develop understanding and appreciate for others. These scholarships are funded annually with contributions from alumni and friends of Bradley University. The Black Alumni Scholarship Committee assists with a fund-raising campaign during February and March of each year. The number and amount of awards is determined by the availability of funds.
