Let's Get Moving at Markin!

To get students and staff excited about working out, Bradley is now offering Les Mills classes at Markin Recreation Center. These high energy workouts are 30-45 minutes long and you can do them at your own pace.

Amy Styles, the new assistant director of group fitness and instructional programs and Les Mills International Trainer and Presenter heads up the program. “We want to inspire students and staff to get moving and take advantage of the offerings at Markin,” she said. Styles, who hails from New Zealand, has been with Les Mills for 23 years, working with trainers all over the world.

Hannah Hospodar, a senior majoring in marketing, enoys working out to relieve stress and is especially excited about the group classes. She’s tried BodyPump, Les Mills Core and BodyAttack and loves the intensity. “The instructors have high energy and make the classes so enjoyable. I plan on going to any classes that work with my schedule,” she said. “They are kind of addicting!”

In addition to group training, you can sign up for personal training sessions with certified instructors who will guide you on your fitness journey.

If you haven’t worked out in a while and feel intimidated, Styles has some tips to get you motivated and moving:

  1. Start small. Just come for 15 minutes and walk around the indoor track. It’s all about getting your foot in the door and committing to moving more.
  2. Aim for consistency over intensity. When the workout hurts and you have a negative experience, you’re less likely to come back. Leave intensity for later and regain the habit of two to three times a week.
  3. Employ the buddy system. Come with a friend. When you’re accountable to others, you’re more likely to stick to a routine. There’s confidence in numbers and you’ll feel supported.
  4. Build a personal program that’s achievable. Try all the workouts more than once and find something you enjoy so you’re more likely to stick with it. Personal Training is a great option to help get you started.

“We want people to enjoy their experience when they come here, so they end up falling in love with working out,” Styles said.
