Biography
Dr. Shelley Y. Hawkins joined Bradley University on June 1, 2022.
During her 35 years of experience in nursing higher education, Dr. Hawkins has held faculty and administrative appointments at both public and private universities with various Carnegie classifications. Prior to her current appointment, Dr. Hawkins was Professor and Associate Dean at Texas Woman’s University College of Nursing, Dallas Center. Additional previous appointments include University of Connecticut, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, University of San Diego, Yale University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Virginia, and Auburn University.
Dr. Hawkins has extensive experience with curriculum development and program evaluation, most notably with DNP and MSN NP academic programs. She is recognized as a national expert in NP education. Dr. Hawkins has significant experience with the CCNE accreditation process and development of evaluation infrastructures. She developed and provided leadership for multiple faculty development and mentor activities having served as a mentor for numerous nursing faculty relative to all aspects of an academic nursing appointment.
Her program of research includes use of telehealth to deliver patient-centered care focused on developing self-care behaviors with adult heart failure patients. In 2007, Dr. Hawkins was inducted as a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (FAANP). In 2018, she was elected President of the Council on Collegiate Education for Nursing (CCEN) of the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB). Dr. Hawkins was appointed as the Director of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Leadership Mentoring Program in 2019 and continues to serve in that capacity. Recently, she was selected as a Fellow of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Wharton Executive Leadership Program.
